ok ive had a few guys ask me about this at the last couple of job walks so here is the writeup. i run a small dirt crew out of jefferson city, mostly site prep, building pads, septic, the occasional pond. ive always bought iron the old way, through a dealer or a local sale i could walk, and i swore id never buy a machine i had not stood on and run first. well i did exactly that and it worked out, so take it for what its worth.
been wanting to step up from a rented excavator to my own full size machine for two years to grow the site prep side. a clean low hour 323 is the sweet spot for my work, big enough for utility trenches and basement digs, small enough to float on my own trailer. problem is every clean one at the dealers was priced like it still had the wrapper on, and the ritchie bros and ironplanet numbers on the nice ones were climbing every sale i watched.
mid september a 2019 323 came up on lucas-motors.com. 3,900 and change on the hours, C7.1, tier 4 final with the DEF system, factory thumb, hydraulic quick coupler, pattern changer so i can run it iso or backhoe style. undercarriage looked barely worn in the photos. the number was about 19k under what comparable 323s were bringing at the big online iron auctions i was already bidding at, and those do not let you lay a hand on it first.
so my first thought was what is wrong with it. did my homework. the listing had around 70 photos plus a walkaround video with a cold start, a hydraulic warmup, and him curling the bucket and tracking both directions. i got my own cat guy, a mobile mechanic i trust, to go look at it where it sat. he pulled the belly pan, checked the final drives for metal and play, measured the chain, called the undercarriage 80 to 85 percent, bushings tight, no weeping cylinders, regen working, no stored codes.
only thing he flagged was a hydraulic hose on the thumb circuit chafing on a bracket and one bucket tooth worn past its buddies. couple hundred bucks total and i fixed both in an afternoon. i bid it, won it just under my number, and had it hauled up on a lowboy from where it sat to my yard. title and ownership paperwork showed up clean about two weeks later. anybody else been buying iron through lucas-motors.com? curious what else is moving through them.
